The flight sim genre is as niche as they come in the video gaming world, niche but surprisingly populated. Everything from the behemoth of Microsoft’s ever-expanding Flight Simulation suite to the reigning king of combat sims’ IL2 to the newcomer Tom Clancy’s HAWX series.
This over-abundance in riches in what is an already tight marketplace for flight simulation games means that no matter how good your game is, there’s really only so much attention any title outside the handful of marque franchises will get. And so it is with Lock On Platinum.
Lock On Platinum collects several games from the series and bundles them together. Lock On Modern Air Combat and Lock On Flaming Cities 2 cater for the single-player components while DCS: Black Shark is mainly for the online multi-player aspect.
Despite the incredible value in the package, any approach to the franchise will most likely be tempered by a gamer’s enthusiasm for the genre itself. Like flight and combats sims? Then Lock On Platinum represents an astonishingly detailed and accomplished entry. Don’t fancy the wide blue yonder and would rather keep your feet on the ground? Better give this one a miss.
Lock On features eight of the hottest and most pimped out planes in the world. Although not an enormous number of planes, the sheer detail built into each one more than makes up for it.
Phat, with a PH no less, phlanes include the F-15C Eagle, the Su-27 Flanker, the Su-25T Improved Frogfoot, the MiG-29A Fulcrum, the A-10A Warthog, the Su-33 Sea Flanker, the Su-25 Frogfoot and the MiG-29C Improved Fulcrum. And if any of that made any sense to you, well you better stop reading this and start playing instead.

The single-player missions, although not anywhere near as developed or packed as HAWX 2, are adequate showcases of the power and flexibility of developers Eagle Dynamics game engine. With aerial dogfights the main course (with a side salad or naval assault and a dessert of ground bombardment), Lock On lives and dies on its combat mechanics.
Luckily enough the package provides a challenging AI opponent and, novelty of all novelties, even a sophisticated team AI! Crazy, I know. Multiplayer comes in the form of Black Shark, which opens a whole new dimension of combat possibilities if you can find someone online to play against.
As with any flight sim worth its salt, Lock On is much better with a flight stick in your hands. There’s only so far you can take the game and the genre without the benefit of a little more nerd-tech. Strap a Cyborg X or a V1 Flight Stick to Lock On and now you’re playing with gas. Maneuvers and missions that were painfully difficult with just a mouse and keyboard become effortless (somewhat) and FUN when the proper equipment is used.
And that’s basically the key to Lock On Platinum. While not re-inventing the wheel in any way, the game and Eagle Dynamics have given fans exactly what they are wanting and not a single scrap more. An excellent package for an excellent price, Lock On may not convert any non-believers but it’ll more than please the devoted masses.
